Description

ITALY: 2 bronze medals (1716) commemorating the Heroic Defence of Corfu against the Turks under the leadership of Matthias Johann Reichsgrave of Schulenburg (1661-1747). The first medal has an armoured and bewigged bust on the obverse and an aerial plan of Corfu showing the range of the artillery on the reverse. Its is engraved by Philipp Heinrich Müller. The second medal has the statue of Schulenburg in Corfu on the obverse and a legend with the date 1716 in latin on the reverse. It is engraved by Georg Vestner. Both medals have a diameter of 48mm. Schulenburg had fought against the Ottoman Turks for the Imperial Army in 1687-1688, but here he was recruited by Venice to defend Corfu against them. For his success the Serenissima erected a statue and awarded him a pension of 5000 Ducats a year. The first medal is inside a large slab by NGC "MS 65 BN" and the second is inside a large slab by NGC "MS 63 BN". Accompanied by their official case.
